One of the destinations which had been on the top of my list, was Mali. So when I finally set foot on Malinese soil, I was looking forward very much to it. Although I was there mainly to work, fortunately I was also able to visit the famous mosque of Djenné. The village itself was very quiet when I was there, and walking around the mud walls of the mosque was a distinct pleasure.
This building is a marvel of achitecture, a huge building constructed completely of mud, while on all sides wooden poles which form the backbone of the building stick out of the walls. The attraction for me was that this building was obviously manmade, yet it had the looks of being a product of nature as well.
In all its simplicity, it is also a proof of how simplicity can stand time and the elements of the desert in which it was erected. Personally, this simplicity also inspires more admiration than many other huge religious buildings which are made of stone or concrete. And the uniformity with the landscape is unsurpassable.
