An idyllic place in West Africa is without doubt Ile de Gorée near Dakar. The place is very peaceful, quiet, far from the hussle and noise of Dakar itself. Yet it is only a short time by boat from Dakar. When I was there, there was a very good hotel/restaurant owned by a Frenchman directly in the small harbour in which you arrive.
During both visits it was great to be on the island after the heat and chaos of West Africa. It is the perfect escape. There is a remainder of a Dutch fortress, and otherwise there are some small sandy streets through which you can wander. Obviously, there are also places to stay on the beach.
I have heard rumours, though, that this place like so many others has not withstanded the influx of more visitors, and even that real streets have been constructed. Possibly, this is one of those places which it is better not to return to, and to saviour the memory of peace, of relaxation, of going back in time....
