While visiting Harar and seeing the many sights in this wonderful city, you will probably see even more interesting things happening right before your eyes on the streets. One of the major assets of Harar is its own people, who overall are friendly and cheerful people, welcoming the visitor to their ancient city. Although Harar has been a Muslem stronghold and forbidden city for a long time, it has acquired a fame of religious tolerance. Indeed, the city breathes a feeling of freedom and respect for people with different opinions.
Harar is at its best in the early morning. The sun casts long shadows on the streets, women cleaning the streets throw up dust which, in combination with the warm early morning light gives the streets an almost mysterious atmosphere. Shadows step through the dusty clouds, lenghtened on the street by the low sun. Of course, the light cast on the people and houses is most beautiful at this time of day. People get ready for market, and there are several markets in Harar: the Oromo market in the east, near Erer Gate, the Christian market in the west, near Showa Gate, and the main market right in the middle of town.
The main market is a peculiar place, it can be found in alleys, streets, on a small square, another square higher up, and you can find many articles for sale. Especially impressive is the meat market, with vultures on the roof waiting to scavenge on leftovers, cows heads carelessly left behind on the pavement, cats on the lookout to steal a piece of meat. Just around the corner, you may run into an especially vain Harari willing to pose. In the evening, the main spectacle is the famous hyena man, who publicly feeds pieces of meat to the hyenas living just outside Harar.
