My first trip in fixed contract for KLM was to Nairobi. At that time, we still had long layovers there, and I decided to go to Mombasa by train with a colleague of mine. It turned out to be a nice adventure. On the way to Mombasa, we were in the same compartment of the train and at 11 o'clock were summoned to separate, because there were compartments for men and women. But since we preferred to stay together, with a Canadian couple with whom we had been talking already for some time, we decided to cheat the system. We stayed on the same bed, with the men in front so it was impossible to see that there was a woman tucked away behind.
It was never discovered, and we had a nice but too short time in Mombasa. Then, we found out that there were only 3rd class seats available for men on the way back. While I have a low limit of traveling standards, one look in the 3rd class cabin was enough. There were hardly benches, and it was actually not much more than a cargo carriage where also people and animals happened to be traveling.
So the trick was again to travel in a 'forbidden' compartment. We had a delicious meal in the dinner carriage and then went to the compartment of my colleague. We had to run at the right moment - fortunately the other women in the compartment were sleeping already. They had their surprise the next morning when they saw a man lying in one of the beds...
