Of course, the notion of a Ugandan person is a far cry from the reality on the ground. While the borders of the country are clearly fixed, the population actually consists of more than thirty ethnic groups. Moreover, several different religions are represented in Uganda making it a truly multi-ethnic, multi-religious country. Fortunately for the visitor, English is widely spoken and communication is not difficult. What awaits the traveller is a friendly, mostly good-humoured people that are often curious to the visitor.
Apart from their uncomplicated and open way of being that reminded me mostly of West Africa, the people add colour to the country. While travelling around and marvelling at the fantastic countryside of Uganda, you are often amazed by the bright colours of their clothes, the impeccable colours of the school uniforms that can be seen anywhere, and the way that both countryside and people form a beautiful composition. People walking the roadsides, carrying their loads on their heads. The amount of missed photo opportunities was enormous - stopping at every moment would have made travelling around almost impossible.
One of the highlights of our trip to Uganda was a visit to a local school. With such a young population, it is no wonder there are so many schools around, and we felt very welcome when we decided to walk into one of them. We were soon greeted by the school kids singing for us, while the teacher took us for a dance in front of the students. They were asked some questions and eagerly answered where they could. We left the building in high spirits, and wished them all a bright future.
