Tanzania: Zanzibar

Zanzibar > Tanzania > Africa

[Visited: August 1994]

Zanzibar is one of those places with an exotic ring to it. Already for centuries, people from many different places have visited this island off the coast of Eastern Africa. And everyone left traces in some form or another. What remains now, is more than just a tropical island with beautiful beaches and a nice warm climate. It is a unique blend of Arab, European, Chinese, African, and other influences.

Apart from this rich cultural heritage, the island is also of interest for anyone interested in exotic spices. Actually, one nickname of the island is Spice Island. We did a spice tour, with the famous Mr. Mitu as a guide. His experience at doing these tours was evident from the first moment. Anyway, it was very interesting to see how all those spices you can now obtain anywhere, originally grow.

Wandering around the old part of the "capital" of Zanzibar, the Old Stone Town is the major proof of the island's history. Here you can find mosques and cathedrals, Persian baths and the former slave market all within walking distance. If you need to see it all even easier accessible, there is always the museum of the island to visit.
