China hostels

An exotic blend of ancient monuments and ultra-modern metropolises, China is a truly unique destination. The country has really opened up in recent years, and with cheap food, transport and hostels dotted all over, China is more backpacker-friendly than ever. But you'll need to go further than the popular cities Shanghai and Beijing to uncover this country's hidden treasures. China demands a full tour to truly experience its' diverse regions. Here's a guide to where to stay in China:

Hostel in China

Shanghai City Central Youth Hostel

Despite the name, the Shanghai City Central may be a little further out the center than other Shanghai hostels, but with a metro station two minutes away, and a free morning shuttle bus downtown, it's easy to get into Shanghai. The rooms are great value and incredibly spacious, and there's free internet and a delicious buffet breakfast. The hostel also offer a range of travel resources, with daily tours arranged to the Suzhou Garden, Zhouzhuang Water Village, and even a three day cruise to the Yangste Three Gorges.

Happy Dragon Hostel

One of the friendliest of Beijing hostels, the Happy Dragon offers tours to all of Beijing's hotspots, from the Great Wall of China to the Summer Palace. Located in the north of the Forbidden City, there's a metro station close by for getting around, and you're within walking distance of JingShan Park, with beautiful views over the city. The rooms are newly renovated and all have a toilet and shower, TV and free wireless internet.

Xingping This Old Place International Youth Hostel

After the hustle and bustle of China's hectic cities, discover the beautiful countryside by staying in a hostel in Yangshuo. The Xingping is a top-rated hostel by the river, in a small town that is 1,740 years old! From the hostel balcony you can see the majestic river view printed on the back of the Chinese 20 Yuan note, and the rooftop bar is ideal for watching the sun set. Go hiking, cycling or take a bamboo raft down the river, and then head back to the hostel to enjoy a delicious wood-fired pizza and meet other travellers. The rooms range from 4 bed dorms to private ensuites, and some are decorated with wood carvings and have their own balcony.

Xian ShuYuan International Youth Hostel

The home of the famous Terracotta Army and a whole host of historic sights, Xian is a must-see city. This hostel is housed in a traditional Chinese courtyard house, close to the main shopping district and the Muslim Quarter. Behind the hostel is Defu Lane, home to countless bars, cafes and tea houses. The hostel has several cheap tours to local sites , but there's plenty going on in the hostel itself, from free dumpling making parties to a weekly BBQ dinner. The Park Quin bar on site is also a cool place to hang out, popular with locals and travellers. The free nightly beer, and welcome coffee and tea add to the friendly atmosphere.

Sanya Eagle Backpackers Hostel

The 'Hawaii of China', Sanya is a laid-back beach resort with spotless white sands. For a budget beach break, head to the Sanya Eagle Backpackers Hostel, which is right next to Dadong Bay Beach, perfect for surfing, snorkelling or sunbathing. Every room has a TV, air-conditioning and a private bathroom, and some even have amazing sea views. Catering to backpacker, the atmosphere is chilled out, and the staff are on hand to give advice on finding a job, English tours, and exploring the local area.
