When I drove to the city, after not having been there for a long time, I tried to dig back in my memory to see if I could fit the images I was seeing with the ones in my mind. I could not. I realized that I was entering a new city. Actually, Doha is not the city it used to be before, as it has also lotst its reputation to be one of the most boring capital cities in the world. Instead, it has joined the construction boom of some other Persian Gulf cities, testified by the tall cranes surrounding many buildings of its skyline.
Certainly, many areas of the old parts of town are still the same as a decade ago, but works are under way to modernize large parts of the capital city of Qatar. Some of these works take place on the southern side of Doha Bay, but by far most modern architecture is being constructed on the northern side. This results in an impressive skyline which is being given shape day after day. During the day, you can see cranes next to almost each and every building, and hear the construction process from a distance.
In the evening, when the darkness blurs the view and gives an entirely new view on the skyline, most of the cranes disappear in the night and you see silhouettes of an extensive row of high rise buildings defining the new Doha. One of the all-time classical buildings of Doha, the Sheraton at the end of the Corniche on the northern side of Doha Bay, is being dwarfed by its new neighbours. Still, the interior of this building merits a visit: the triangular shape, the lights on all floors, and especially the centrally located elevator shaft with elegant elevators are still beautiful to see.
