While approaching Dubai from the air, it is once again obvious how man is able to live anywhere, to adapt to local circumstances and modify those circumstances to his own needs. After flying over a seemingly endless desert, hours of uninhabited yellow sand below, suddenly you see apparently new asphalt roads, oasis, houses with swimming pools, before touching down at one of the most modern airports in the world. As you exit the building, the heat jumps down on your shoulders and slows your pace. From there, it is a short hop to the city centre.
From far away, you can already discern the skyline of this city, which must change every year as new buildings go up and these cities never seem to be finished. I decided to walk in the new, modern area to appreciate the new buildings, the view over the creek that divides the two parts of Dubai. Using mainly concrete and glass, the new buildings are all different, made by daring architects, all shaping and reshaping the feel of the city, the image of the city, and giving it a character.
While on the waterfront old sambuks wait for their next trip, fishermen prepare for their next catch and fragile but strong men walk with heavy cargo loads on their shoulders to the boats like people have done for a long time, just behind them the city is taking on a new face, a business like face, an international face that makes Dubai look like a fresh, modern city in full swing and development.
