The summer heat can be oppressive in Japan. A high humidity makes breathing heavy, and therefore the wish to escape the city bustle urgent. A peaceful escape in Narita is the famous Naritasan complex in the heart of the town. It contains the Shinshoji Temple which is a pilgrimage destination for millions of Japanese yearly. The real devotees walk around the Main Hall 100 times!
But even for an outsider this temple and its surrounding areas is beautiful enough to merit a visit. The impressive temples, the well-kept colours of the buildings, the gracious forms of the ornaments and the wells are a pleasure to the eye. And the entire area breathes tranquillity and peace, harmony and completeness. Japanese believers strictly adhering to the rules complement the setting.
Walking around the area brings you also to some examples of Japanese gardening and the inevitable pond with carps in bright colours and considerable weight. It is in the pond that I found a small shelter building where I sat for some time to contemplate the serenity of the surroundings. Every now and then, one of the carps would make some noise by splashing around in the mirror-like waters below.
