Already from far away, the central spire of this stupa towers over the road leading up to it. It does not seem far, but this is also because of its size, and because of the fact that the stupa lies on top of a hill. It is only when you enter the compounds of this sacred place that you realize just how brilliant it is. Covered completely in gold, wherever you go you catch the reflections of the structure on your eyes.
This Great Sacred Stupa is also on of the main monuments of the country. Construction started in the 16th century - the site must be maintained regularly because it does not tell its age. While walking around the perfectly square monument, each different angle gives you a different view. The sun plays a game of sunrays and shadows. It almost feels like a light show being played before your eyes.
Probably we also visited this monument at its best moment, just before closing time. The sun was already losing strength, and this resulted in delightfully warm colours on every surface of the stupa. Well, I will let the pictures speak for themselves!
