It is difficult not to "meet" Gaudí in the streets of Barcelona. He left a heritage of houses and parks in various parts of the city. All his traces are a testimony to life, to colours, to capricious forms and to fantasy. Gaudí has been able to make art very attractive for all different kinds of people, of various ages and interests. Some of his most obvious legacies include the Casa Batlló and the Park Güell.
The Casa Batlló is situated in the Passeig de Gracia not far from Plaza Catalunya. When I was there years ago, it was also possible to enter the house and take a closer look at his inside decorations, nowadays visitors have to remain outside and enjoy his peculiar forms from the street. He manages to give a candy-like look to houses, and Casa Batlló is no exception. Small towers, strangely formed windows, colourful details on the walls and roofs all add up to a typical Gaudí experience.
The nice thing about Park Güell is that it is readily accessible to everyone. You can marvel at the strangely formed benches, the seemingly impossible columns which are absolutely not standing straight, the bright colours everywhere. It is interesting to see how people of all ages truly enjoy themselves in this Gaudí theme park and enjoy art together. Looking at the small tower, you wonder whether you are not actually in a fairy tale.
