The bad thing about famous sights is, that they attract lots of visitors. If you want to see those famous places, it is often best to go as early as possible. That's why I decided to leave early for a visit to the Duomo in Milan. Indeed, when I arrived at the square, I was one of the few people around. The Duomo loomed large over the square with its unmistakeable Gothic architecture.
Construction of this typical building started in 1386, and the structure still stands proud in marble and with thousands of statues. Each spire on the cathedral has a statue on top, and then as you get closer you discover there are many more in the sides. Of course, it is impossible to stay outside. The inside is completely different: the ceiling appears much higher than you would have thought, while light trickles through the enormous leaded windows.
Obviously, it is possible to confess, at one place even in various languages - foreign visitors can clear their conscience here if they want. After walking around the Duomo, I also climbed the stairs, which took me to the roof of the building. From here, you don't only get a great view of the surroundings, but it also allows for a great close up of the spires that are so typical of the building.
