Most travellers love looking at globes at times in which they don't travel at all and dream about the places they discover on the globes. I am no exception. So when I discovered the Globe museum in Vienna, I decided this would be a great place to visit, and I must say that it was even more interesting than I had hoped. Old globes on display, most hanging in heavy wooden structures, some of them huge.
The museum attracts so few visitors they only open one hour a day, but although it is not big, it certainly deserves a visit and the one hour opening time is needed to see it well. It is interesting to see globes from different centuries, and conclude how mankind has discovered and mapped the world. I still think it is amazing that in ages without satellites, planes or other spotting means from the sky, people were able to draw quite accurate maps and globes.
Then there are the globes with astrological signs, the sky, and in the attic there are (newer) globes of the moon as well as some of the planets of our solar system. Personally I liked the display downstairs better. The only disadvantage is, I think, that it is not possible and allowed to turn the globes. But this is entirely understandable of course.
