Italy hostels

Italy is a backpacker's dream; home to countless cultural cities filled with ancient history and art treasures, brilliant beaches on the coast and on the islands of Sicily and Sardinia, and breathtaking mountains and lake scenery. It's also surprisingly cheap to visit - you can find top quality tasty food in a local trattoria or local market, the trains are well-priced and efficient, and there are plenty of hostels in Italy to crash in. To help you plan your trip in Italy's top cities, here's a selection of the best budget rooms for backpackers.

6 Small Rooms

One of the most central Naples hostels, the 6 Small Rooms is the perfect base to explore the city. This small and super-friendly hostel is run by an Australian who loves the city and has lived here for years, and the staff are always on hand with sightseeing and nightlife tips, and maps to help you get around. The dorms are bright and spacious (with no bunk beds!), and there's a huge common room with movies and music to chill out in the evening.

Seven Hostel

Sorrento is famous for its breathtaking views of the Amalfi Coast, and is a great stop-off after visiting Naples. The Seven Hostel is ultra chic but also cheap; for the price of an ordinary backpackers hostel you get to stay in an eighteenth century mansion with stylish decor, an amazing rooftop terrace, and a bar and restaurant serving delicious meals. Located in Sant-Agnello, spend your days wandering the path-strewn hills, lazing on the beach or exploring the coast by boat. In the evening, the bars, pizzerias and discos beckon.

Alessandro Palace Hostel and Bar

One of the most popular Rome youth hostels, the Alessandro Palace has been catering to backpackers for years, and offers a whole load of extras. A short walk from Termini train station, all the rooms in this hostel have a bathroom and air conditioning, and it's easy to meet other travellers in the bar on site, with a widescreen TV and cheap drinks! It's easy to eat on a budget, with a free breakfast and free pizza party, and all guests get 30 minutes of free internet a day!

Academy Hostel

Florence is an essential stop on any tour of Italy, and the Academy Hostel is right next to the Duomo, the city's most famous landmark. On the first floor of a 17th century palace, the comfy dorms range from 3-6 beds, with safe lockers and artsy decor. The hostel offers free breakfast, luggage storage, linen and towels, and a whole host of useful extras for backpackers, from irons and hair dryers to free soap and shampoo.

Backpackers Maria Ausiliatrice

Venice is famous for its high prices, and there are certainly less hostels here than in other Italian cities. Which is why the Backpackers Maria Ausiliatrice is so refreshing - this large hostel has cheap, clean and comfortable rooms, all with private bathrooms, and loads of social space. Located near the 'Giardini' boat stop, it's a scenic boat ride down the famous canals to Venice Lido and San Marco Square.
