Madrid is not a very big city, but especially the centre is busy. Like many other European capitals, it is simply not built for today's traffic. The narrow streets with their high houses are not really fit for enormous amounts of cars. Fortunately, the centre has a lot of small and large squares where pedestrians and visitors can relax and enjoy the beauties of the city. Oftentimes, the squares harbour proofs of history.
The most obvious square (plaza) in Madrid is Plaza Mayor. Like most other Spanish cities and towns, Plaza Mayor is a square square, with a few entries on all sides. Largely closed to traffic, they are the ancient city navels. Now, they are main tourist attractions, with terraces and bars, restaurants and shops, but also a quiet atmosphere if you come at the right time.
One of the other mayor squares is Plaza España, which is nearly at the edge of the city and close to the royal palace. Although a traffic hub in the city, it is also home to a monument and a small park in its middle. One of the famous figures at the monument are Don Quijote and Sancho Panza and Cervantes, their creator. If you want to escape the city bustle from here, Casa de Campo is near, which is a huge area outside the city where you can spend hours wandering around. It is also the place to go for young Spanish couples.
