After getting off the train, some long tunnels take you out in the sunlight of Monaco and you find yourself directly on the seashore. From here you can choose: left to Monte Carlo and the casino area, and right to the port and old Monaco ville. I first went left, looked in awe at the amount of luxury boats docked in this small port, and took a public elevator up to the casino area. From here, you get a nice view of this strange little kingdom.
I then went on for a walk in the casino neighbourhood. Luxurious cafes and hotels surround this area. The casino itself, the people it attracts, the surroundings suggesting wealth, made this an area where I did not really feel at home. Luxury shines everywhere, but it is a very materialistic luxury. Interesting to observe, but I was drawn back to the main city and decided to walk around the country to the other side of the port.
Moving up from the Place des Armes, you actually get nice views of Monaco port. The reward for walking up the steps is a maze of small streets, with the Mediterranean colours I like to much (orange-yellow and orange-red). I had to search very well to find places with few foreign visitors who are everywhere in this small, posh country. Monaco is certainly located beautifully, but I felt as if walking around in a world completely strange to me.
