When we arrive in the old town of Sighișoara in the late morning, we walk up from the west side, and walk the streets of this medieval citadel until we reach the main square. We are surrounded by a beautiful city, but also by crowds of tourists, and we soon decide that visiting the old town at this moment does not do it justice, and is not wise given the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. We buy an ice cream and escape, explore the fortified churches instead, which turns out to be a good decision. We are back to Sighișoara very early the next day. When we arrive at the same square, we know that we have made a good decision. We now have the town and its 16th century houses to ourselves, and enjoy it so much more.
We wander the small, cobble-stoned streets, can take pictures without having to worry about people, climb the Boot Maker's tower, and end up walking uphill. There are a wood-covered stairs leading straight to the top of the hill on which Sighișoara is built, and we find the Church on the hill, with a unique, quite bare facade. We find the church closed, and have a peek in the adjacent, large cemetery. We take a street to walk back down into the old town of this World Heritage site. The streets are still empty, cafes closed, so we make another round of the medieval streets. We see part of the defensive walls on the east side, with its battle towers rising high above the rest of the city. We walk back down to a small square with big trees. The yellow house across is supposedly the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, also known as Dracula.
A little more to the east, we see the big clock tower that stands high above the entrance gate. It has an ingenious mechanism, which makes figures come out of the clock when it strikes the hour. I inevitably think of the famous astronomical clock in Prague, albeit this one is much more modest. We walk to the main square again, where we see some people arriving. But the little train on wheels we saw the previous day is gone, fortunately. We walk some more streets, and when we see more people arriving, we know it is time to leave. We are happy to have seen Sighișoara at the best time of the day, without anyone around. We are off to our last fortified church, and then on to Sibiu. Transylvania does not stop to surprise us with its richness of places to see and explore.
