Spain hostels

There's far more to Spain than sun and sangria - from the 'Pintxos' tapas bars in San Sebastian to the Moorish Palaces in Seville, this is one diverse country that begs to be explored. Backpackers are drawn to Spain's beautiful beaches and buzzing cities, but it's the friendly locals, laid-back lifestyle and legendary nightlife that keep young travelers coming back for more. If you're planning a budget break around Spain, here's a guide to where to stay:

Hostel in Spain

Albareda Youth Hostal

Barcelona has a different vibe from the rest of Spain, but this distinctly Catalan city is certainly cool. The city is always bustling, and there's something for everyone, whether you want to gorge on fresh produce at La Boqueria market, hit the beach, browse the Picasso museum or party till dawn. There are many Barcelona youth hostels, but few are as centrally located at the Albareda. Stay here, and you're right next to the Marina Port Vell, a two minute walk from Las Ramblas, and 20 minutes from the beach. There are plenty of hip bars and clubs within stumbling distance, and there's a metro line close by for going further afield. This friendly hostel caters to young travellers from around the world, so there's a big lounge with movies, chess games and even musical instruments.

Hostel One Puerta del Sol

No tour of Spain would be complete without a trip to the cultured capital Madrid - the city's mix of museums, grand architecture and great nightlife makes for one exciting city break. One of the top-rated Madrid youth hostels, Hostel One Puerta del Sol is a small hostel with a sociable atmosphere, and is great for meeting other travellers. Half a block from Madrid's main square, on a street surrounded by Tapas bars, the hostel is within walking distance of the major sights. The 4-8 bed dorms are clean and comfortable, equipped with lockers, and there are personal touches, like free guide books in the lounge.

Hostel in Spain

Hostel One Sevilla

With its grand Moorish palaces and quaint squares, Seville is one scenic city. The Hostel One Sevilla is equally pretty, housed in an old Mansion decorated with ornate tiles. Despite the traditional setting, the hostel's facilities are thoroughly modern, with plenty of computers with free internet and wi-fi, and a kitchen for making cheap meals. The roof terrace is the perfect place to enjoy a beer on a warm summer's evening, and there's a lounge with comfy sofas for when the weather cools down.

Indigo Youth Hostel

Valencia is often overlooked in favour of Spain's other cities, but the beaches, cutting edge galleries and amazing Paella are just some of the reasons to visit. The Indigo Youth Hostel is located in the Barrio del Carmen, the historic heart of the city, and just 10 minutes from the train and bus stations. The rooms have cool decor, and the hostel hosts several social events - try the Tapas Tour, Pub Crawl or Spanish Classes to brush up on the local lingo!

Makuto Backpackers Hostel

Lying at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Granada is the home of the famous Alhambra Moorish citadel. For a trip to this inspiring city, the Makuto offers a unique place to stay in the historic Albayzin quarter. This original hostel was created by a couple of Spanish backpackers, who have laid on loads of freebies for the guests, from free breakfast, coffee and tea, to morning walking tours, maps and guide books. Choose from private rooms, traditional dorms, or the girls-only 'Mirror Room' and unwind after a day of sightseeing on the patio, by lazing in the hammocks.
