The English Parliament is housed in the former Westminster Palace, palace of kings. The building is enormous also to today's standards, comprising 1,200 rooms and more than 5 kilometres of passages! For the visitor to London, it is another must-see, as the famous Big Ben looms over the complex and strikes the hours away with a world-renowned melody.
The building is situated directly on the river Thames. Westminster Hall, directly adjacent to the Big Ben, is the oldest building, construction of which started in the 11th century. Parliament first met here in 1265. All buildings survived the great fire of London as well as World War II bombardments, and have grown to become the symbols of British government.
Walking around the area you can find Downing Street 10, home to the Prime Minister, which is closed to the Public. There are other government buildings and ministries in the neighbourhood. Crossing Westminster Bridge rewards you with a cross-the-river view of the Westminster area. From here, you can start a walk with views on the city, go up in the London Eye and continue walking along the river banks, with alternatively gardens, futuristic buildings, and views of London on the other side.
