Canada hostels

Canada offers a mix of cosmopolitan cities and the great outdoors, and is a year-round destination. In the winter, backpackers can hit the slopes and try out ski-ing, and in the summer, the rolling mountains, green forests, lakes and beaches beg to be explored on foot. Even if you're not the outdoorsy type, Canada has plenty to keep you entertained. The bustling nightlife, historical sights and cultural melting pot of cheap cuisine of Canada's cities are perfect for backpackers. Here's a guide to where to stay in this scenic country.

Hostel in Canada

Auberge L'Apéro

Montreal is North America's most European city, a cosmopolitan mix of chic cafes and colonial buildings on cobbled streets. The L'Apéro is a cosy and comfortable hostel in a converted 19th century building, and with only 18 beds, there's a friendly, homely atmosphere. In the heart of downtown, the hostel is located on a quiet side street just steps away from the main shopping district, and within walking distance of Old Montreal, the Musuem of Fine Arts, and the home of Ice Hockey, the Bell Center. The rooms are bright and airy with hardwood floors, and there's a scenic terrace where you can enjoy a continental breakfast or drink in the evening.

HI-Ottawa Jail Hostel

The capital of Canada often gets overlooked in favour of tourist-magnets Toronto and Vancouver, but Ottawa is a beautiful city with plenty of things to see and do. The National Gallery, boat trips down the Rideau Canal and bargain food at Bywater Market are just some of the city's attractions. HI-Ottawa Jail Hostel is a hostel like no other - this former jail is known as the most haunted building in Ottawa! But you're hardly 'locked up' here - the only time you'll have to serve is in converted jail cells that are now comfortable rooms, and 'inmates' can choose from traditional dorms to the 'Warden's Quarter's Private Apartment', with enough space for a family. There's also a TV and games lounge, laundry, kitchen and dining room on site, where a free continental breakfast is served.

Canadiana Backpackers Inn

One of the liveliest and friendliest Toronto hostels around, this Backpacker's Inn is in the heart of the Entertainment District, and only three blocks from the CN Tower. The social calendar is packed with events - once a week they take guests to visit the comedy club that gave Mike Myers and Jim Carrey their first big break. There are also pub crawls, bowling, Karaoke, BBQs, and a huge free pancake breakfast on offer. The hostel feels thoroughly Canadian, with every room named after a famous native, a 10ft Mohawk Indian in the lounge and a totem pole on the patio.

Hostelling International Vancouver Central

One of Canada's most cosmopolitan cities, Vancouver feels more part of the great outdoors than a bustling metropolis, surrounded by mountains, lakes and beaches. If you're looking for Vancouver hostels, then the Hostelling International chain are known for their sociable atmosphere and top facilities. The Vancouver branch is by Granville Street, close to the city's best nightlife, and there's a huge free breakfast to help you recover from the night before. There's a load of free tours arranged, from sightseeing by day to pub crawls at night, and a big bar and lounge for meeting other travellers.

SameSun Backpacker Lodges - Banff

For a budget ski break, Banff is ideal for students and backpackers. The lively resort has great snow and a range of activities on offer, and bustling nightlife for après ski fun. The SameSun has a funky and friendly atmosphere, located in the heart of downtown Banff. The rooms are spacious and clean, and there's a brand new kitchen, common area and outdoor patio to enjoy. The staff will help you book a ski package, and have loads of tips on dining and drinking in town.
