Just one day after the firemen, finally, declared the fire to be extinguished, I visited Ground Zero, the site where once the proud and defying Twin Towers stood. To fully grasp the impact of the attacks on the skyline of New York, we walked across Brooklyn Bridge. I was amazed at how much the lack of the huge Towers has changed the skyline.Walking towards the WTC area we came across several small and larger remembrance sites.
Small poems by schoolchildren, hearts, colourful decorations, but above all flags were to be seen everywhere. Obviously, these grew more prominent when Ground Zero came into sight. It was possible to get pretty close to the disaster area, and once there, a lot more of tributes could be seen. Pictures of young people who vanished were tied to displays together with flowers, more flags, other texts, all kinds of supportive words written on blankets.
Shuffling along the boards displaying so many different messages of support and sorrow, we saw people cry, we saw people staring in front of them, dreaming of the times when they would have been dwarfed by the enormous structures, sometimes we would see tourists taking pictures and trying to get as close as possible. All in all, to me, it was a chilling experience, giving me chicken skin because of the remembrance of the incredible attack on this dynamic city.
