Probably the biggest atraction of Sydney is its location at the sea. It inspired Jørn Utzon to design the Opera House and it made the Harbour Bridge a necessity. It also carved out the many little bays, as well as providing the sand to several beaches. And since Australians love their sea so much, the city has grown in all directions on its shores.
Some of the many lovely areas are Manly and Watson's Bay - diverse in character and each with its own attractions. Manly is a more lively suburb, with lots of restaurants, shops, and many other facilities, and obviously its famous large beach. Watson's Bay is a quiet area, not so much catered for lots of visitors but anyway with tranquil streets, small secluded beaches, and nice walking possibilities on both its shores. You can get views on the Pacific and a classical red-white lighthouse guarding the rocky shore. 
When you take one of the many ferries back to Circular Quay, you get a good view on all the bays, inlets, beaches, suburbs and hilly surroundings of Sydney Harbour. The view of the approaching city is exciting - its modern skyline with the botanic gardens at the forefront, and of course, its Opera House and Harbour Bridge. While these two latter monuments are probably over-exploited, their fame is well deserved. It is the paradox of many worthy landmarks.
