In the continent of the Amazon, of Indians, of Incas, there is one city which rivals the most charming cities in Europe in elegance: Buenos Aires. Laid out on the shore of the widest river mouth in the world, this fashionable city sparkles, is a combination of the most stylish minds from countries in Europe which have a name in this area: Italy, Spain and France. To walk around in Buenos Aires as a European is walking in a Mediterranean city. The wide avenues, filled with lots of chaotic traffic, luxurious shopping centres, people dressed in beautiful clothes following the latest fashion, a culinary culture which makes anyone look forward to having dinner, terraces where people sit outside to have something to drink or eat and meanwhile watch others walk by.
Exploring this city is always nice. There is the touristy La Boca area, old San Telmo, Palermo are just a few musts on any visit to this city. On Sunday, one should not miss the antique market on Plaza Dorrego, where apart from looking at curiosities in the market itself, part of the square is dedicated to couples performing the tango. To visit a tango bar is anyway a must. In San Telmo, there are various bars where one can drop in, and just sit down and enjoy watching people dance, listen to live piano playing, while drinking a glass of local wine.
Eating out is another thing: of course famous for its enormous consumption of beef, the Argentine cuisine is lucky enough to have a combination of mediterranean influences, and it is almost impossible to have a disappointing dinner in Buenos Aires. For both watching tango and eating out, there is one thing to keep in mind: start out late! Even when going out far after midnight it is on most evenings perfectly possible that you have to wait for a table. After dinner there are of course the numerous discotheques, sometimes huge complexes, where you can dance until the sun is already a long way up.
