From the very first day we arrived in Haiti, we were aware that there was a lot of street art to be seen everywhere. Not only are tap-taps painted in bright colours and with original decorations, also street signs can represent almost anything. An announcement for a band performing can result in a splendid mural in a street, which would not be out of place in a museum or gallery. The art can be naive and sometimes absurd, and reminds at times of Dalí, the famous Spanish painter.
Apart from the intricate paintings, you can also see a lot of signs that, especially when you can read French or Creole, can be funny, interesting, touching, religious, and revealing. Some are exemplary of the country and the living conditions of the Haitians. You can find the entire menu of a restaurant artistically painted on a wall, or an offer for an article on sale exposed outside a shop, but also an entire advertisement as a mural.
Some shops openly choose to display their religious adherence outside their shop, or even calling their shop with a religious slogan that should inspire confidence in the potential customer. Walls can also be used to express your opinion much like grafitti, or express one's support of the Brazilian football team during an international tournament. Haitians are creative people, and it also shows through the way they use simple means with artistic talent to sell, to express, to advertise.
