Named after a Venezolan woman who was trapped here by pirates and who survived by "renting" her body to sailors ages ago, María la Gorda now is the perfect spot in Cuba for those looking for peace, for isolation, for some undisturbed days on the beach or in the water. It is also possible to do some hiking from here and admire the rapidly changing vegetation of the surounding natural reserve.
After some turbulent days in the east of the country, it was a relief for us to arrive at this beautiful spot without hassles of any kind, and with only a few people staying in some houses right on the beach. Apart from the beach (and the hammocks hanging between some palm trees!), the other interest in this place should be scuba diving - after all, this resort in fact is a diving resort.
During the dives, we enjoyed a still largely live coral, many tropical fish and crustaceans. I was especially struck by the rays of the morning light filtering through the intense blue of the sea water.
At the end of the afternoons, sunset was a spectacle which was worth watching every day. The changing colours of the sand, the sky and the sea, and the very clear orange ball which was visible right to the end made every end of the day a marvellous one.
