European Festivals

The price of festival tickets in the UK increases every year, and certainly not just with inflation. The major music festivals, such as Reading, Leeds, Glastonbury, Download and T in the Park, now cost practically the same as a weekend away in the sun. Whilst music festivals can be a lot of fun, there is also a lot of stress to put up with. Finding a good place to pitch your tent can be a challenge, particularly if the weather is bad. Then there's the added unpleasantness of the temporary loos, the copious amount of mud that somehow ends up in your tent, your bag and your hair, as well as the extortionate arena prices for a plastic cup of warm cider. Isn't there an easier way?

If your summer holidays usually entail one sunshine filled break overseas and one mud filled music fest, it might be that in the face of the recession this year you're trying to choose between the two. However, if you wanted to combine the two, instead, you might find yourself getting a lot more for your money, as there are plenty of ways to get sun, sea and sand as well as live music, dancing and beer all around Europe this summer.

Exit Festival in Serbia is a popular choice with western Europeans, mostly because it's relatively cheap, the line-up is usually good, and the weather is superb. Exit functions on a different schedule to most British music festivals, because of the scorching weather, so you can bask in the sun all day before heading to the stands in the early evening hours once the heat of the day has subsided a little. Camping costs are minimal, food and drink are reasonably priced - no wonder Exit has become a regular summer pilgrimage for many British music lovers.

If it's beachscapes you're craving, then check out Primavera Festival in Barcelona, stretched out along the city's gorgeous coastline. Watch your favourite bands play out the day as the sun sets over the surf and bask in the glorious evening light with a cool, fruity glass of sangria in your hand.

It's easy to get cheap flights over the net these days, and you needn't spend a fortune on communications either. However, in all the hysteria and crowds, it's notoriously easy to lose your friends in the crush of the crowd, and a phone at a festival is a highly useful thing in case of any emergency. When planning your festival jaunt, consider a mobile phone from the Vodafone site to take advantage of their fantastic summer promotion running from June to August: you can make calls and send texts from all across Europe (as well as Australia and New Zealand) for the same prices that you'd expect to pay in the UK.

Don't miss out on the sunshine or the live music this year; instead work them both into one unforgettable long weekend away.
