On our way to Nevis, we got a great view of the southern coastline of St Kitts. Sailing quite close to the coast, we could easily see the bays and beaches, the hills, and the rocky coast where waves were breaking. Looking at the map, we noticed that this coast is actually a peninsula of St Kitts, pointing southeast like a bony finger with a swollen nail. A few days later, we were heading to this same area of the island of St Kitts. When we reached the highest point of the entrance road to the south, we stopped, climbed a hill with prickly cacti, and reached a point with a great view over the coastal wonder that is the southeast peninsula. From here, it was clear to see that the peninsula is very narrow.
What followed was an exploratory drive to the very tip of the peninsula. We had a regular car, and worked our way down on some very bumpy roads to reach some remote bays and beaches where we did not find a single person. On the way south, we marveled at the sights; small peninsulas jotting out into the sea, hills covered by vegetation, small and large salt ponds, until we reached the dock where ferries connect St Kitts to Nevis. On the way north, we saw some more viewpoints which offered fantastic views of the westcoast of the southeast peninsula. It was easy to understand why developers pick this part of St Kitts to build hotels and apartments, it simply is a very beautiful piece of the island.
The sun was getting closer to the horizon too fast to our taste, and we stopped near South Friars Bay to enjoy one of the beaches of the southeast peninsula. A lively bar next to the beach, the sea was calm and worked like a magnet on me - after a long day of exploring the island, it was just a great feeling to run into the clear waters of the Caribbean. By now, the sun was casting a warm light on the hills, rocks, and beach, and the sunset that followed was memorable. We found out that dinner was not served, so moved a little more north where we found a place with plenty of people having dinner outside, on the beach. It turned out to be a great end of a beautiful afternoon of criss-crossing around southeast peninsula.
