After driving from the airport straight to my base in Klaksvik, in the northeast of Faroe Islands, I received a picture of a wild waterfall from a friend I met on the flight from Copenhagen. She told me it was a short drive west of the airport: clearly, I hadn't done my research of Faroe Islands properly. With the airport being on the other side of the archipelago, I decided I would visit before my return flight. The ever changing forecast for the Faroe Islands gives mixed forecasts, so I just have to try my luck. I leave early in the morning, and am greeted with a beautiful, bright rainbow over the bay of Klaksvik. Given the turmoil I am in in my private life, I take it as a positive sign, a ray of hope for a brighter future. It is also a beautiful farewell gift from the Faroe Islands.
On my drive southwest, I start saying goodbye to the rugged landscapes of the Faroe Islands. I drive through rain showers, see sunlight, and enjoy driving through the many tunnels that facilitate transportation around the archipelago. The further south I get, the thicker the clouds above me. Just before the very last tunnel, I stop to take pictures of the pinnacle rock just off the shore. Once on the other side of the tunnel, I can already see the tiny village of Gásadalur. Immediately after that, the top of Múlafossur comes into sight. I drive down the last bends of the road, park the car, and walk the short distance to a viewpoint of the famous waterfall. There is a strong wind blowing from the side, making sure that much of the time, the waterfall becomes a spray tumbling down towards the sea.
There is light rain coming down, but especially in the Faroe Islands, that is no reason not to keep going. I reach the end of the trail, and find myself at the top of dilapidated stairs. I cautiously walk down, even though there is a sign telling me not to. After carefully climbing over slippery boulders, I reach the perfect viewpoint. I am just above sea level, and see Múlafossur across the small bay. I watch the spectacle of the ever changing waterfall, see the wind play with the falling water, making it look like bridal veil and, when it blows less for a short while, seeing the full force of the waterfall. At the same time, I marvel at the powerful waves crashing and pounding into the rocky coastline as they must have been doing for so many thousands of years. This wild spot is exhilarating, and a befitting farewell to the Faroe Islands. On my way back to the airport, it is time to fill up the tank, and I try to wash the accumulated mud on my shoes as good as I can before I catch my flight.
