When walking around in Warsaw, it is impossible not to notice the many, many signs remembering the passerby of Warsaw's history in the Second World War. Of course, Warsaw and Poland as a whole suffered tremendously in the War, because of their location between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. 
There is no other city that I can think of which has so many, often small, memorial stones in memory of the victims and the suffering during the World War. Although most of them are incomprehensibe for someone who does not master the Polish language, in most of them there is a reference to a year (often 1944). 
In some, there is even a direct link to Hitler who attacked Poland in 1939 - which was the official start of World War II. Even though the odds were against them, the Polish managed to fight the Germans, they stood up against their oppressors during the Rising in 1944 and ultimately survived as a nation. Certainly feats to be remembered.
