As I write these lines, images are flooding in of the collapsing of the World Trade Center, or Twin Towers, after an incredible attack by two hijacked airplanes. Even though the images are being aired over and over again, it seems impossible that these towers have disappeared from the face of Manhattan. The pictures here depict the Twin Towers as they have been for nearly three decades. Also, this is a place to pause for a moment to think of all those trapped inside.
From a distance, the WTC was one of the unmistakable signs of the Big Apple. Coming in from JFK airport, they were always there, on the left hand side, shoulder to shoulder, in no small part defining the famed skyline of the city. I especially liked to arrive at night, when lights were on in the building. Somehow, you could appreciate their magnitude still a little more. Of course, their real size became very clear when standing just at their entrance. 
Here, it used to be a coming and going of business people, workers, cleaning personnel, security guards, and tourists alike. For the first ones, they perhaps just thought of going to their office, for the visitors, the buildings were not just another skyscraper. For all, they were one of the key symbols of the city since their construction finished in the early 1970s. It still leaves me speechless to think that these colosses do not exist anymore. May these pictures be a small contribution to keeping their memory alive.
