Trinidad and Tobago is a very relaxed country. People are from such different origins, that tolerance is a very important ingredient in every day life. Still, it is sometimes necessary to point out that something cannot be done. We came across several occasions where this led to quite amusing signs on walls. In a bar with loud sensual music blaring out of loudspeakers, the following was painted on a wall with posters of almost nude girls: No obscene language - no bare back.
But there were more occasions where a few eyebrows could be raised, often in amusement. In an effort to sell more, someone started his advertisement with God is love. It was sometimes very funny to walk in a quiet street, and suddenly come across another peculiar message painted on a wall. Near a post office at Scarborough, the capital of Tobago, we found an enormous painting of an envelope with instructions how to mail a letter.
Then, in Charlotteville in Tobago, instead of lavatories, we found Public convenience as an eufemistic alternative. But for me the funniest sign was that of Adult diapers outside a shop in Pointe Fortin. After taking the picture, I was called inside the shop and had a very interesting conversation with the lady. Not so much about adult diapers, but rather her children who wanted to study in the UK.
